The LA Times has just published a project in which they interviewed and photographed the gubernatorial candidates for the California Recall Election:

If you're even mildly interested in the election, I recommend that you create an account with LA Times in order to learn more about the personalities that are running. When I received my sample ballot in the mail, my friends and I hooted and hollered over the names and occupations of the various candidates. Mary "Mary Carey" Cook, Adult Film Actress. Kurt E. "Tachikaze" Rightmyer, Middleweight Sumo Wrestler.
The LA Times project, however, has changed my mind a bit about peoples' candidacy and their sanity.
Diana Foss is an anti-recall candidate. She doesn't want anyone to vote for her, in protest of the recall.
Kelly Kimball is running on the Butt Monkey Beer Party ticket, in protest.
Daniel Watts is a single-issue candidate running to raise awareness about the student fees increase, and promote that issue amongst viable candidates.
Reva Rene Renz wants to initiate the state-mandated use of Ignition Interlocking Devices to protect drunk drivers from themselves.
Nathan Whitecloud Walton is running to promote youth activism. And he's Bill Walton's son.
So it makes more sense to me, now. Many candidates don't want votes. Or they are running to pressure the major candidates to pick up their issues.
I think this is a good thing.
