What a glorious last few days.
My classes are all going splendidly: Environmental Studies (taught by the amazing
Barry Chernoff, who is new to Wes this year!); Latin American Politics; Resistance Politics; Environmental Law and Policy; and my Individual Tutorial with
Jay.
Taylor hosted a
"Asian-American Jazz Mini-Fest" on Tuesday night, with performances by his group, SpiderMonkey Strings, and guests
The Far East Side Band. The World Music Hall setting was intimate, the musicianship worldclass, and the sound... Good god, the sound. Taylor's compositions... So beautiful and bold. Seeing him up there, playing coronet while simultaneously conducting the string quartet, and grinning like a fool whenever Jay took a solo... Sigh.
Tonight, I attended a talk by Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Rhodes Scholar, and founder/principal choreographer of the National Dance Theater Company of Jamaica, on
Caribbean Creative Diversity. My favorite quote from the evening, regarding the interdependence of the Americas and of global power relations: "The jailers and the jailed are, you realize, after all, both
in jail."
there has been a campus-wide postering campaign for
this website.
indeed, there will be a campus-wide party on the 19th.
arr(gh), wesleyan. :)
things that have made me smile thus far today:
-the sight of a crayon-blue mini cooper packed full of drums, cymbals, and stands, parked outside of guiseppe's.
-finding a copy of james joyce's
the dead nestled under my door, a gift from a thoughtful friend.
-the prospect of clean laundry looming on the horizon.
the last couple days i've been wishing with all of my heart that i'll wake up and be a sixth grader again; i want to start over, and do things right. i want to end up in the right place... even though
this is supposed to be the "right place," it
has to be the "right place," i'm still not sure.
i get the feeling, however, that nobody's sure.
to reinvest myself...
