that clawing in my stomach? that burrowing pestilence?
------thats just my sinking heart
nika and i were the youngest people there... i had decided to go on a whim, after more than two years of incessant pleading.
"pleaaaaaaaaase, amy, just stop by, sit in on a tune... SING!!! thats it, you gotta sing!!! you'll just get up there and blow them away!!!"
gene and i would start laughing because we both knew i needed more confidence in order to pull something sassy off like that. getting in front of a whole room of people on a saturday night at one of the best hotels in the world... and singing... riiiiiiiight.
but tonight i decided to go. showed up at J&J to hear the last part of gene's gig. told me to head to highlands after nine. so i did.
20 minutes till the end of the gig, i sneak up behind gene and ask if theyve played 'the way you look tonight' yet that evening.
yes i know the song is overplayed. but its been on my mind a lot lately because ive heard some good local renditions in the last few weeks. and they had just finished that tune when i got to J&J, and i was kinda bummed i had missed it.
well, the bassist for the trio suddenly grabs the mic and exclaims, "this little lady is gonna sing us a song!!!! whats your name???"
good god. it was my biggest dream/nightmare come true.
the key was a minor third higher than i was used to singing the song in. but i think i pulled it off. i got a lively response from the crowd. i missed some notes, my heartbeat was definitely racing.
but hey, gene wants to get together with me on monday and go through some tunes - to build me a vocal reportoire. :)
